Public Alert Organizer
Job Announcement
Public Alert Organizer, Spring 2010
The North Carolina Conservation Network is seeking candidates for the position of Public Alert Organizer. The NC Conservation Network is a statewide network of over 100 environmental, community and environmental justice organizations focused on protecting North Carolina's environment and public health. The NC Conservation Network directly advocates for equitable and sustainable solutions for our environment.
The Public Alert Organizer will play a critical role in NC Conservation Network’s work. The ideal candidate will be tech savvy, be great with people and volunteers, be creative and have strong writing skills, and be passionate about building an effective and long lasting citizen movement for clean air, clean water, and sustainable living.
The Public Alert Organizer will work to manage and mobilize North Carolinians who are part of our statewide "Public Alert" network. A major responsibility will be managing and coordinating weekly email action alerts to the Public Alert subscribers on the top environmental and public health issues facing the state. The Organizer will also work to increase the number of activists subscribing to the action alerts through a variety of tactics including event and festival tabling, social media marketing, and online petition campaigns.
While we want to broaden the number of citizen activists, we also want to deepen the involvement of some of our top activists. Through traditional community organizing, the Public Alert Organizer will develop and train a strong set of "offline" citizen activists and leaders. The Organizer will develop a strong group of volunteer leaders for such tactics as lobbying their representatives, media outreach, and event attendance and planning.
Primary Responsibilities
• Collaboratively create regular action alerts and campaigns around the state's top environmental issues: work with our organizing and policy staff to create these actions including online advocacy campaigns, postcards, petitions, phone calls, letters to the editor, and more.
• Build the base of NC Conservation Network Public Alert activists: identify and recruit new people to subscribe to our weekly action alerts, conduct outreach to existing Public Alert activists to get more involved, give public presentations to civic groups, and come up with creative ways to build our movement.
• Facilitate organizing Public Alert activist outreach to policymakers: work to generate emails, calls, and other communications with legislators on the top North Carolina environmental issues.
• Plan and implement training opportunities for Public Alert activists: develop and coordinate regional briefings and trainings for activists, while also including outreach to allied organizations and their members.
• Coordinate Public Alert activists to attend offline events: lead event recruitment including for volunteer phone banks, festival tabling, lobby days at the legislature and in districts, media events, town hall forums, and public comment hearings.
Ideal Job Skills and Experience
• BA/BS, preferably in political science, public policy, communications or environmental studies/science.
• Understanding of the key components of citizen advocacy, state level non-profits, policy-makers, and media.
• Very strong writing and creative writing skills, especially an ability to write about complex issues in plain language.
• Experience managing, engaging and motivating volunteers.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to work with a diverse cross-section of people across North Carolina and professionally.
• Comfort with technology and database management.
• Have an interest in mixing technology and community organizing to build a strong citizen movement for clean air, clean water, and natural areas.
• Must be willing to work non-traditional hours and travel across the state.

• Good knowledge of North Carolina politics and non-partisan issue advocacy.
• Experience and comfort with online advocacy tools and database management.
