UNC Distinguished Professor of Marine Sciences Christopher S. Martens will address macro planetary shifts, measurable today, which are due to atmospheric CO2  -- and the impact and implications of these changes on human and animal life. In addition to ocean acidity, macro changes to be discussed include:

  • changes in coral reef ecosystems
  • arctic permafrost thawing leading to further large releases of carbon dioxide and methane
  • new understanding about CO2 uptake by Amazonian rainforests

Rich stories and beautiful images from the world's only underwater laboratory and other exotic locales will help counterbalance an otherwise serious message.

With joint appointments in the UNC Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering and Marine Sciences, Dr. Martens will present information of interest to the layman and expert alike.

Please join us for a great evening on a truly life changing topic!
