<p>The Cape Fear River Watch (CFRW) mission is to protect and improve the water quality of the Lower Cape Fear River Basin through education, advocacy and action.<br><br>
<b><u>Background</b></u><br><br>
Cape Fear River Watch was founded in 1994 as a grassroots environmental nonprofit organization, open to everyone and dedicated the improvement and preservation of the health, beauty, cleanliness, and heritage of the Cape Fear River basin. The CFRW mission reflects our belief that environmental problems can only be solved with a multi-pronged approach that includes education, advocacy, and action. <br><br>
<b><u>Position Summary</b></u><br><br>
CFRW seeks a dynamic, motivated and outgoing part-time Education Specialist (ES) to coordinate and lead our education activities. The ES should be committed to the CFRW mission, knowledgeable of and interested in environmental issues, and able to teach a diverse range of learners in a variety of learning environments. <br><br>
The ES position will require strong organizational and communication skills, the ability to make concise and attractive presentations to prospective clients, and the ability to engage child and adult learners. <br><br>
The ES reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Greenfield Lake Manager, the City of Wilmington and the Town of Leland. <br><br>
<b><u>Job Environment</b></u><br><br>
Office and outdoor settings. Variable hours. Medium physical labor including handling canoes, kayaks, and paddle boats. <br><br>
<b><u>Position Priorities </b></u><br><br>
*Research public school curriculums and create complementary educational programs that are attractive to administrators, teachers, parents, and students.<br>
*Develop and maintain professional relationships with public and private school teachers and administrators and demonstrate the value of Greenfield Lake as a field trip destination.<br>
*Obtain certification from the City of Wilmington (COW) to give the EnviroscapeĀ® presentation as part of the COW contract.<br>
*Assist in creating high quality educational and outreach materials including brochures, flyers, posters, videos, etc.<br>
*Identifying and helping to write grants related to CFRW environmental education activities in and in support of the ES position.<br>
*Serve as the CFRW staff liaison to the Education and Outreach Committee.<br>
*Plan and implement educational programs identified by the ED and Board as important to CFRW mission.<br>
*Promptly and professionally responding to emails and phone calls during the work week.<br>
*Supervising and supporting interns and volunteers working on environmental education programs.<br>
*Tabling at outreach events, interacting with the general public and disseminating basic CFRW talking points. </p>
- Degree in environmental science, environmental studies, education, biology, ecology, or other related field or extensive knowledge and experience in environmental education. At least 2 years experience in environmental education preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of environmental education concepts and ideas, multiple teaching methodologies.
- Specific knowledge of the environment of the Lower Cape Fear River Basin.
- Good writing and presentation skills and experience.
- Skill at relating to learners of all ages and clearly relying concepts and ideas related to environmental education.
- Understanding of behavior management techniques.
- Strong computer skills including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher (or other graphic design programs).
- Ability to safely operate a canoe/kayak/paddleboat.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, a good sense of humor, and the ability to be a good team member and work collaboratively within and outside of CFRW.
- Previous grant writing experience is preferred.
- Flexibility is a requirement.
