The Nature Conservancy, North Carolina

Work will be performed at the Natural Heritage Program in Raleigh, The North Carolina Chapter office of The Nature Conservancy in Durham, and on a home computer.

This intern will assist in the creation of a GIS file/relational database of exotic invasive species in North Carolina, based on records documented by the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)’s Natural Heritage Program. Tasks will include gathering data from site records, organizing pertinent data for analysis, merging invasive species tabular data with spatial data, scanning records and creating .pdf’s. This project has the potential for the development of spatial analysis queries to investigate the location and abundance of invasive species in natural areas across the state. Examining the spatial extent and distribution of invasive exotic plants will help inform decision-making for conservation land managers in North Carolina. ****The Nature Conservancy's mission is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. Using both public and private funds, The Nature Conservancy has helped to preserve almost 700,000 acres in North Carolina since the late 1970s. Visit us online at nature.org/northcarolina
