A Global Warming Machine

The general sentiment in our offices is "unbelievable": the federal government is giving Duke Energy $125 million in tax credits for two projects, including the Cliffside coal-fired power plant expansion.  Many of you are familiar with this expansion and our work to promote efficiency before building new coal-fired power plants.

The government calls this corporate welfare "clean coal" tax credits.  And Duke says the credits validate their objective of advancing "environmentally sound coal technology".

I think the Sierra Club member quoted in the Charlotte Observer has it right:

"The Bush administration is using taxpayer dollars to accelerate global warming," said Chatham Olive, a member of the N.C. Sierra Club Executive Committee. "The proposed Cliffside plant is a global warming machine."

The first thing environmentalist have to do is stop the hysterics. It makes them look foolish.

Then they have to stop politicizing issues such as global warming. Al Gore isn't the best spokesperson to talk about the subject. His family made millions raping the environment.

Then they have to stop demonizing people. Does anyone except lunatics believe that Republicans want the world to be destroyed. Even if they are a bunch of money grubbing pikers, what profit is there in a dead planet. Everyone of today's bigshots in the environmental movement including RFK, Jr. are the biggest abusers. And their Stalinist tactics aren't going to win over anyone expect the fringe far-left.

North Carolina State Senator Fred Smith -- yes, a conservative -- believes we need to balance environmentalism with economic growth and prosperity. Protection of individual property rights is important. Taking someone's home and giving it to land developers is neither fair nor environmentally friendly. Sen. Smith's bill would stop the use of Eminent Domain to turn farmland into industrial parks and shopping malls.

Sometimes I suspect the main thing we will leave to our children is a vast pit of unintentional irony, stored on the Internet.
