News Digest FAQ
NC Conservation Network’s News Digest, a daily electronic media clipping service (delivered via email Monday-Friday), covers environmental news stories from about 40 North Carolina media outlets across the state. At the click of a button, the Digest keeps affiliate groups and activists updated on each day’s media coverage on environmental issues, including editorials and letters to the editor. All articles are protected by copyright and should not be reprinted or distributed except for personal use. Opinions expressed in the articles do not reflect the views of the NC Conservation Network, its staff, or Board of Directors.
Q: How do I subscribe or recommend others to subscribe?
A: The News Digest is a project of the NC Conservation Network. The News Digest is available to individuals designated from dues paying affiliate organizations of the NC Conservation Network. These individuals tend to be staff, Board members and lead activists from affiliate organizations.
Q: What are the minimum technical requirements necessary to receive the News Digest?
A: Your email system must allow you to read html formatted text and links. If you can’t read html formatted email we have a plain text version available.
Q: How do I submit an article that I didn't see in the News Digest?
A: Send the URL and subject info to Greg Lytle at newsdigest[at]ncconservationnetwork.org.
Q: I had trouble reading an article that was included in the News Digest?
A: Sometimes websites are busy and will return an error message. Occasionally the article is no longer an active link on the website. The NC Conservation Network retains copies of all articles from NC sources. If you really need a copy please contact Greg Lytle, NC Conservation Network News Digest editor at newsdigest[at]ncconservationnetwork.org.
Q: I didn’t see an article in the News Digest?
A: Sometimes print articles are not posted on websites. Only the Charlotte Observer and the News and Observer are monitored on weekends and holidays. We depend on subscribers and others to send us relevant articles from the weekends and holidays that we may have missed. Keep in mind that each media source also has a different update schedule.
Q: How do you choose news articles?
General News Philosophy:
We include news in the daily News Digest that is about NC conservation issues covered by major NC media; conservation issues, which would significantly impact NC; or issues that offer a different perspective as space and resources allow.
Generally to be included an article must be available on a media website for a period of at least 48 hours and be generally available to the public in print or over the public airwaves.
We only monitor a few specific sections of each website, so occasionally an article may be missed if it’s not in one of the sections we scan daily. If you see an article that we missed please contact Greg Lytle, NC Conservation Network News Digest editor at newsdigest[at]ncconservationnetwork.org. Note that we only scan for articles of interest, we do not read the entire article since that is too time consuming and would not allow for us to provide the News Digest in a timely fashion.
Q: I have a press release that I would like to send to the News Digest subscribers, etc.?
A: The NC Conservation Network does not publish press releases in the News Digest. The News Digest is meant to provide a summary of all NC environmental stories covered in the media. However, the NC Conservation Network’s Weekly Alert features information on issue updates, campaign activities, meetings, conferences, and workshops. The Weekly Alerts are sent out every Friday and you can submit updates to Grady McCallie at grady[at]ncconservationnetwork.org. You can also post events and job openings on the NC Conservation Network website. All dues paying affiliate organizations have a username and password to access the NC Conservation Network’s affiliate-only website where you can post upcoming events and jobs. If you need your username and password you can contact Mindy Hiteshue at mindy[at]ncconservationnetwork.org.
Q: Is there a weekly digest version of the News Digest?
A: No. The Daily News Digest can get overwhelming with 15-75 articles per issue, but there is no practical way to do a weekly (or other time period) digest. The primary reason is that many of the articles are only easily reachable for a few days. But, we do keep archives of most articles for reference.
