The mission of the Conservation Corps North Carolina (CCNC) is to empower young adults through meaningful outdoor work that benefits North Carolina’s land and water and creates healthy communities. CCNC is a program of Conservation Legacy that partners with ACC and public land managers in North Carolina. CCNC engages motivated young adults (ages 16-27) to complete challenging and impactful conservation service projects throughout the region. Projects may include trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazard fuel reduction, prescribed burning, and ecological restoration. Crews may also complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on project partner needs, including disaster relief if the opportunity arises.

About the Position

Our affinity crews create an inclusive space for groups that have been under-represented to gain hands-on experience, technical skills training, and professional development. These crews foster a safer, more comfortable learning environment where participants are able to maximize their opportunities to grow and develop. The term “Women’s+” aims to be inclusive of trans, non-binary, genderfluid individuals, and cis-women.

As an AmeriCorps program participant with Conservation Corps North Carolina, your office is the great outdoors! Each crew consists of 6-7 members and 2 leaders. Crews work and camp for 8-10 days at a time in either frontcountry (access to your crew vehicle and trailer), or backcountry (hiking all your supplies in with backpacks) locations, in all types of weather conditions. You will work as a member of the crew; perform heavy manual labor, and complete conservation projects using a variety of manual and power tools. You will a participate in environmental education activities. Risk management is of utmost importance, and all procedures must be followed at all times.

Projects are located on Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Parks and the Croatan National Forest. Projects include hazard tree removal, fire line construction, trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, re-vegetation and local environmental service projects. Crews may also complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on project partner needs, including disaster relief if the opportunity arises.
