The NC Conservation Network (NCCN) is looking for a smart, resourceful, and detail-oriented advocate for a two-year stint as our Policy Associate. NCCN works together with nearly 100 partner organizations across North Carolina to protect public health and the environment through issue advocacy campaigns. The Policy Associate is a key member of the organization’s policy staff, helping strengthen environmental protection while getting an in-depth exposure to advocacy in North Carolina. NCCN is committed to racial equity and inclusion, and this value is a key part of our advocacy-based issue work, including the work of the Policy Associate.
The Policy Associate works as an integral member of NCCN’s five-person policy staff. Other policy staff specialize in environmental justice, energy, water, air, toxics, and resilience issues; the Policy Associate provides vital support advancing campaigns across these topics. Working under the direct supervision of NCCN’s Policy Director, the Policy Associate researches issues, sets up and attends meetings with state legislators, and helps draft comment letters and reports for public release. During the NC legislative session, the Policy Associate tracks environmental bills in the state legislature and has lead responsibility for producing NCCN’s weekly Legislative Update. The position is a great entry point to a career in environmental advocacy, and is a two year position. The position may involve non-traditional hours during the state legislative session.
NOTE: The position is based in Raleigh, North Carolina. During the ongoing pandemic, all staff are working remotely; the office is likely to reopen for at least some in-person work in a few months. At that point, the job will involve in-person as well as remote meetings with allies, agency officials, legislators, and legislative staff.
Research, analyze, and write on environmental topics.
Year-round, NCCN relies on the Policy Associate to conduct research and analysis that undergirds issue advocacy campaigns. Projects may, for example, consist of: conducting phone calls, emails, and online research to understand how other states address an issue emerging in North Carolina; evaluating how well a state rule has worked over the last decade; or drafting a comment letter suggesting improvements to a proposed permitting rule.
Track environmental legislation and draft legislative updates.
During the state legislative session, the Policy Associate tracks key environmental bills in the state legislature. The Policy Associate listens to and summarizes committee meetings and assembles NCCN’s weekly Legislative Update, which keeps ally organizations up to date on events in the session.
Participate in coalition campaigns and advocate directly.
As the Policy Associate develops deeper expertise in specific topics, the Associate will be asked to brief coalitions, draft factsheets and explanatory materials for specific campaigns, and at times lobby decision makers directly.
