Big Sweep is a citizen volunteer effort to protect our watersheds, water quality, and make our environment litter-free. For over 30 years, Big Sweep has coordinated cleanups in Wake County focused on watersheds, streams, lakes, and wetlands that ultimately lead to the ocean. We will be picking up garbage from the park, creeks, and surrounding streets in teams led by site staff.
Duties and Impact:
By participating in the Big Sweep cleanup, volunteers will be making an enormous impact on the cleanliness and preservation of the waters we play in, drink from, and enjoy! Volunteers will be a part of Litter and recycling cleanup in designated zones of the park. Walnut Creek Wetland Park has participated in this program for decades and we usually gather about 2,000 – 3,000 pounds of trash each time.
Work Environment:
The event will take place outside, on land and in the water. We will be on uneven terrain throughout the acreage of the park with access to facilities at the nature center. The work will be physical and likely wet and dirty.
Additional Information
Requirements:
- Ages 0+. Those under 15 must have a parent/guardian present.
- Signed digital Terms and Conditions or a paper release form. Those under 18 will need a parent/guardian signature.
- Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing.
- Closed toe shoes are REQUIRED and long pants are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
Other Instructions:
- Bring your own filled water bottle and begin hydrating the day before.
- All supplies and logistics will be provided. Volunteers should bring sunscreen, a hat, and appropriate clothing for work in the outdoors.
- Registered volunteers will receive additional information (such as parking and meeting locations) in their confirmation email.
- Registered volunteers’ information will be shared with our event partner, Wake County Big Sweep.
- Makeup date(s) will only run if a prior date is canceled. Registered volunteers will be notified of these updates via email.
