The hidden life of coastal nesting birds plays out not far from North Carolina’s busiest beaches every spring and summer. Golf-ball sized chicks hatch on the bare sand, vulnerable and dependent on their parents. Thousands of terns return to the same tiny, eroding islands to nest. Raucous gatherings of pelicans rear chicks at remote colonies. Few people know these birds better than Lindsay Addison, Audubon’s coastal biologist.
