Information

Join Partners for Environmental Justice and the City of Raleigh Stormwater Management for a GSI Warrior service project at Raleigh Union Station.

This unique hands-on volunteer opportunity combines a guided green stormwater infrastructure tour with a community storm drain marking project. Participants will learn how stormwater moves through our urban environment, explore innovative GSI practices in Downtown Raleigh, and help educate the public about protecting our waterways by marking storm drains that flow directly to local streams and lakes.

This service project is a great opportunity to:

  • Take a guided tour of Green Stormwater Infrastructure practices in Downtown Raleigh.
  • Learn how rain gardens, bioretention areas, permeable pavement, and other GSI features help manage stormwater runoff.
  • Participate in storm drain marking to help raise awareness about water pollution prevention.
  • Understand how litter, chemicals, and other pollutants enter our waterways through storm drains.
  • Support water quality protection efforts in the Walnut Creek watershed and beyond.
  • Learn about the connection between urban infrastructure, environmental stewardship, and community resilience.
  • Meet neighbors, connect with City staff, and make a tangible impact on your community.

Storm drain marking is a simple but powerful way to educate the public about protecting local waterways. Markers are placed on storm drains to remind residents that anything entering a storm drain flows directly to nearby streams, rivers, and lakes without treatment. By helping mark storm drains, participants play an important role in promoting pollution prevention and encouraging responsible environmental practices throughout our community. GSI uses soil, plants, and engineered natural systems to capture, filter, and absorb stormwater runoff. These practices help reduce flooding, improve water quality, restore natural hydrology, and create healthier, more resilient communities. By participating in this service project, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how green infrastructure and community action work together to protect our watersheds.
