Hearing the Water: Music, Land, and Indigenous Movements in North Carolina
Join Coastal Carolina Riverwatch for a special evening with Dr. Stephen Stacks, Assistant Professor of Music at North Carolina Central University and an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe.
Dr. Stacks will explore the connections among music, land, water, and Indigenous identity in North Carolina—and how Native American music and culture have often been misrepresented or erased from American musical history.
Through three North Carolina case studies, the evening will explore the music of outdoor dramas including The Lost Colony and Strike at the Wind; singing and the environmental justice movement in Warren County; and a network of Indigenous women singer-songwriters giving voice to Southeastern Native lands, waters, and people.
Dr. Stacks is the author of The Resounding Revolution: Freedom Song after 1968 (University of Illinois Press, 2025). His research focuses on Black and Native American musics, including the history of racial caricature in American music and the ways Indigenous musicians have negotiated and resisted those representations.
This event is free and open to the community. Space is limited, and advance registration is encouraged.
