Information
Partners for Environmental Justice (PEJ), in partnership with Raleigh Creeks and supported by Groundwork USA and the Urban Waters Learning Network (UWLN), invites you to join us for the Green Futures Habitat Restoration Workshop—an engaging, hands-on opportunity to learn how healthy streams support healthy communities and how you can play a role in protecting them.
This workshop is part of PEJ’s Green Futures Workforce Development Pilot Program, a community-centered initiative in Southeast Raleigh that connects watershed restoration with workforce development opportunities. Through this pilot, residents gain hands-on experience in habitat restoration, environmental monitoring, and green infrastructure while building skills that support both environmental stewardship and future career pathways. The program is one of three nationally recognized community-led restoration pilots supported by the Urban Waters Learning Network.
The Habitat Restoration Workshop is one of two Green Futures training workshops being offered. Participants may also participate in the Water Quality Monitoring Workshop, which focuses on understanding stream health, collecting environmental data, and learning how community members can help monitor and protect local waterways.
Participant Incentives
- Attend one workshop and receive a $50 gift card.
- Attend both workshops (Habitat Restoration and Water Quality Monitoring) and receive a $75 gift card.
Through a combination of discussion, demonstration, and outdoor activities, participants will explore practical restoration techniques and gain a deeper understanding of the connection between local waterways, wildlife, and people.
During the Workshop, Participants Will:
- Learn what stormwater streams are, how they are impacted by development, and why restoration is critical to the health of our watersheds.
- Discover how natural materials such as fallen branches, leaves, and other yard debris can be used to reduce runoff, prevent erosion, and create habitat for wildlife.
- Participate in the construction of a burrito berm and learn how this simple restoration practice can improve stream and landscape health.
- Explore the often-overlooked relationship between streams and communities and discuss how local actions can contribute to long-term environmental resilience.
Event Information: This workshop is free, and lunch will be provided. Participants should dress for the weather, as a portion of the workshop will take place outdoors.
Eligibility: Open to individuals ages 15 and older.
Additional event details will be shared upon registration.
