Information
Partners for Environmental Justice (PEJ), in partnership with NC State’s Environmental Technology and Management Program and supported by Groundwork USA and the Urban Waters Learning Network (UWLN), invites you to join us for the Green Futures Water Quality Monitoring Workshop—an interactive, hands-on opportunity to learn how scientists and community members assess stream health and use data to protect local waterways.
This workshop is part of PEJ’s Green Futures Workforce Development Pilot Program, a community-centered initiative in Southeast Raleigh that connects watershed restoration with workforce development opportunities. Through this pilot, residents gain hands-on experience in habitat restoration, environmental monitoring, and green infrastructure while building skills that support both environmental stewardship and future career pathways. The program is one of three nationally recognized community-led restoration pilots supported by the Urban Waters Learning Network.
The Water Quality Monitoring Workshop is one of two Green Futures training workshops being offered. Participants may also attend the Habitat Restoration Workshop, which focuses on practical restoration techniques that improve stream health, reduce erosion, and enhance wildlife habitat.
Participant Incentives
- Attend one workshop and receive a $50 gift card.
- Attend both workshops (Water Quality Monitoring and Habitat Restoration) and receive a $75 gift card.
Through a combination of discussion, demonstration, field activities, and data collection, participants will learn how watershed conditions influence water quality and how community science can support healthier streams and neighborhoods.
During the Workshop, Participants Will:
- Learn the fundamentals of watershed science and understand how activities on the landscape affect streams, rivers, and downstream communities.
- Explore key indicators of stream health, including water clarity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and conductivity.
- Gain hands-on experience using water quality monitoring equipment and field-testing techniques.
- Learn how to collect, record, and interpret environmental data to better understand watershed conditions.
- Examine how pollution, stormwater runoff, development, and land-use changes impact water quality and aquatic ecosystems.
- Discover how community-based monitoring can inform restoration efforts and support environmental stewardship.
- Discuss career pathways and workforce opportunities related to environmental science, conservation, and watershed management.
